[칼럼] "삭제 키 없는 기록, 한국일보의 윤전기는 멈추지 않습니다"

시대가 변했습니다. 애틀랜타를 대표하는 유력지 AJC마저 주중 종이신문 발행을 중단하고 디지털로 전환했다는 소식이 들려옵니다. 누군가는 이를 두고 "종이신문의 시대는 끝났다"고 말합니다. 심지어 일각에서는 여전히 종이신문을 고집하는 우리를 향해 시대를 역행하는 미련한 고집이라거나, '사양 산업'을 붙들고 있다는 날 선 우려를 보내기도 합니다.

빠름이 미덕인 시대, 클릭 한 번이면 뉴스가 쏟아지는 세상에서 종이신문은 분명 느리고 비효율적인 매체로 보일지 모릅니다. 하지만 우리는 오늘 다시 묻습니다. 언론의 본질은 속도에 있는가, 아니면 깊이와 책임에 있는가.

우리가 막대한 비용과 노력을 들여 매일 아침 종이신문을 배달하는 이유는 명확합니다.

첫째, 우리에게는 디지털 소외 계층을 지켜낼 의무가 있습니다. 애틀랜타 한인 사회를 일궈낸 주역인 시니어 세대들에게 스마트폰의 작은 화면은 여전히 낯설고 불편한 장벽입니다. 그분들에게 매일 아침 문 앞에 놓인 신문은 단순한 정보지를 넘어, 고국과 이민 사회를 연결하는 유일한 통로이자 벗입니다. 효율성이라는 잣대로 이들의 눈과 귀를 닫아버리는 것은, 언론이 취할 태도가 아닙니다. 우리는 마지막 한 명의 독자가 신문을 펼칠 때까지 그들의 알 권리를 지킬 것입니다.

둘째, 종이신문은 '삭제' 키가 없는 책임의 기록입니다. 인터넷 기사는 문제가 생기면 순식간에 수정하거나 흔적 없이 삭제할 수 있습니다. 가짜 뉴스와 확인되지 않은 정보가 판치는 이유이기도 합니다. 그러나 한 번 인쇄된 활자는 돌이킬 수 없습니다. 그 무거움 때문에 우리는 기사 한 줄, 단어 하나를 고를 때도 수백번을 고뇌합니다. 이것은 미련함이 아니라, 역사 앞에 떳떳하고자 하는 치열한 '사명'입니다. 우리는 우리가 찍어내는 모든 활자에 담긴 진실의 무게를 믿습니다.

셋째, 우리는 이민 역사의 사관(史官)입니다. 스크롤과 함께 흘러가 버리는 인터넷 기사와 달리, 종이신문은 스크랩되어 보관되고 훗날 우리 후손들에게 "우리가 이렇게 치열하게 살았노라" 증언하는 사료가 됩니다. 10년, 20년 뒤 애틀랜타 한인 사회의 모습을 증명할 수 있는 것은 서버 속의 데이터가 아니라, 누렇게 바랜 종이신문 한 장일 것입니다.

남들은 돈이 되지 않는다고, 시대에 뒤떨어졌다고 손가락질할지 모릅니다. 하지만 우리는 자부심을 느낍니다. 우리가 찍어내는 것은 단순한 종이가 아니라, 한인 사회의 '자존심'이자 '역사'이기 때문입니다.

물론 한국일보 애틀랜타는 변화를 외면하지 않습니다. 이미 25년 전부터 디지털 신문을 발행해 왔으며, 가짜 뉴스 없는 정확한 정보만을 전달해 왔습니다. 우리는 웹사이트와 유튜브(이상무가간다), 종이신문을 아우르는 입체적인 소통을 통해 미래 미디어 환경을 선도하고 있습니다. 무엇보다 우리는 미국 한인 운영 언론사 중 최대 규모의 윤전 시스템을 가동하고 있기에, 어떤 환경 변화에도 흔들림 없이 신문 발행을 지속할 수 있는 든든한 기반을 갖추고 있습니다.

Why the Presses Still Run at the Korea Times Atlanta in the Digital Age

Times have changed. Even the AJC, Atlanta’s leading newspaper, has ceased its weekday print publication, shifting fully to digital. Hearing this, some declare that "the era of print is over." Others criticize us for clinging to the past, labeling our persistence as foolish or dismissing the newspaper business as a "sunset industry."

In an age where speed is a virtue and news floods our screens with a single click, the printed newspaper may indeed seem slow and inefficient. However, today we ask: Does the essence of journalism lie in speed, or does it lie in depth and responsibility?

The reason we invest immense resources and effort to deliver a printed newspaper to your door every morning is clear.

First, we have a duty to protect those marginalized by the digital shift. For the senior generation—the pioneers who built the Atlanta Korean community—the small screens of smartphones can still be an unfamiliar and difficult barrier. To them, the newspaper placed at their doorstep each morning is more than just information; it is a lifeline and a companion connecting them to their homeland and the immigrant community. Shutting their eyes and ears in the name of efficiency is not the attitude a responsible media outlet should take. We will protect their right to know until the very last reader unfolds our pages.

Second, a printed newspaper is a record of responsibility with no "delete" key. Internet articles can be modified or deleted without a trace the moment a problem arises. This impermanence is often why fake news and unverified information run rampant. However, once ink meets paper, it is irreversible. The weight of that permanence forces us to agonize a thousand times over every sentence and every word. This is not stubbornness, but a fierce mission to stand honorable before history. We believe in the weight of truth carried in every article we print.

Third, we are the historians of our immigration history. Unlike online articles that scroll away and vanish, printed newspapers are clipped, archived, and preserved. They become the historical records that will one day testify to our descendants, "We lived this fiercely." Decades from now, the proof of the Atlanta Korean community’s existence will not be data on a server, but a yellowed page of a newspaper.

Others may point fingers, saying it is unprofitable or outdated. But we feel a profound sense of pride. What we print is not merely paper, but the self-esteem and history of the Korean community.

Of course, the Korea Times Atlanta does not ignore change. We have been publishing digitally for 25 years, delivering accurate information free of fake news. We are preparing for the future of media through a multi-dimensional approach that encompasses our website, YouTube, and the printed paper. Furthermore, operating the largest rotary printing system among Korean-owned media in the U.S., we possess the solid infrastructure to continue printing regardless of environmental changes.

The Korea Times Atlanta will not waver. As long as there are readers waiting for the truth embedded in the scent of ink, our presses will not stop. This is why we do not—and cannot—let go of the printed newspaper, even amidst the changing tides of our time.
